Fitting sprinkler systems in all new homes could save many lives each year and dramatically slash the cost of fire and water damage, according to Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Speaking at the unveiling of a pilot project that will see sprinklers installed in a two-bedroom vulnerable person’s bungalow in Oswestry, Andy Blizard, the head of SFRS’s fire safety team, called for sprinklers to be fitted in all new homes, particularly those occupied by the elderly and other more

The High Sheriff of Shropshire reached new heights this week when he visited Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Shrewsbury headquarters.

During the visit on Monday High Sheriff Robert Bland and his wife, Tricia, climbed aboard an ALP, an aerial ladder platform, and were lifted almost 50 feet above the main drill yard.

In what turned out to be an action-packed visit, Mrs Bland also volunteered to be cut free from a wrecked car in a carefully staged mock road traffic collision more

An appeal has gone out for more “on call” firefighters across Shropshire but they are especially needed in both Prees and Newport.

Anyone interested can turn up at two recruitment events being held at Newport Fire Station, Salters Lane, on March 12 from 6pm to 9pm and Saturday, March 28 from 10am to 1pm.

There are a total of 15 firefighters who cover the Newport area but they need more with six recently retiring or moving away.

While there are are 11 more

Shropshire’s chief fire officer is urging the public to think carefully before dialling 999 during a 24-hour strike by firefighters due to begin on Wednesday morning (Feb 25).

John Redmond says contingency plans are in place that will enable Shropshire Fire and Rescue to deliver as normal a service as possible but says the public can help by dialling 999 only if they have a real emergency.

“Our contingency plans are focussed on providing a service that is as near normal as more

There will be some dramatic action at Shropshire Council's former offices in Bridgnorth this evening (Feb 18) when firefighters will take part in a search and rescue exercise.

The exercise scenario will begin at 7pm and will involve crews from Tweedale, Albrighton, Much Wenlock and Wellington, some using breathing apparatus, searching for casualties who have failed to respond to a roll call following the discovery of a "fire" in the building.

A campaign has been launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service to help the county’s “vulnerable” people who are most at risk from fire breaking out in their homes.

A total of five Vulnerable Person’s Officers (VPO) will visit homes across the county to carry out fire risk assessments to reduce the potential danger.

But they are appealing to the people of Shropshire to help identify those most at risk in their neighbourhoods.
