A campaign to get more women to become firefighters has been launched as three of the latest recruits get ready to join Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A primary school teaching assistant from Much Wenlock, Church Stretton fitness instructor and Clun pub barmaid are undergoing training at the fire training school in Telford to bring to 19 the number of women now serving as county firefighters.

The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Festival of Carols was held at St George’s Church, Frankwell, Shrewsbury on 11 December 2014. As usual, this was an uplifting Christmas event and was enjoyed by all who attended.

A raffle and collection was held. The total money raised was £557.97 and broken down as below:

People using portable heaters for cheaper winter heating are being urged by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service to be aware of the dangers.

Many may be “playing with fire,” say Electrical Safety First after their survey revealed more people were switching to portable heaters to offset costly heating bills.

A Shropshire woman was today thanking the stroke of luck she says saved her life after fire struck at her home in High Ercall.

Lynn Wickson was asleep in bed late at night when she was suddenly woken by the sound of her smoke alarm. She ran into the smoke-filled living room of her bungalow in Crossfields and found her Christmas decorations ablaze.

She fought the blaze with a blanket and finally managed to smother the flames with a large cushion but not before she suffered burns more

 

A warning about the dangers of exploding e-cigarettes has been issued by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire chiefs have released graphic film footage of an e-cigarette being engulfed in flames after an incompatible charger overheated. Fire officers tested a standard e-cigarette being charged with a non standard charger, which burst into flames after just 35 minutes.

They have caused more than 100 fires nationwide –resulting in one death –although no reported more

Fire service personnel will be available at Telford Town Centre to offer fire safety in the home advice to shoppers.
