Sally's Firefighting Fit

A firefighter who feared she would never walk again after breaking her back in an accident has raised £2,200 for the charity which got her back on her feet.

Sally Barnett (42) also did it in style with a sponsored weekly walk up The Wrekin for a whole year including Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, wearing full firefighting kit and carrying a breathing apparatus cylinder weighing 17.5kg for a total distance of 85,280ft.

Call for Extra Vigilance During Strike

The Fire Brigade’s Union will be taking a series of strikes over eight days from Saturday August 9 until Saturday August 16.

There will be two periods of strikes on each of the eight days with the first period between 12pm and 2pm and the second between 11pm and midnight each day. The strikes are in support of the FBU’s ongoing campaign against changes to pensions proposed by the Department of Communities and Local Government.

A Firefighting Life for Shropshire Women

More Shropshire women interested in becoming county firefighters attended an introductory session at Shrewsbury fire HQ.

A total of 19 turned out for the third "taster" session over the weekend following on from similar events in Craven Arms and Oswestry earlier this year.

They learned how they could join the county’s 300 plus “on call” fully trained firefighters who deal with around the clock emergencies.

Women Firefighters - A "Taster" Day on July 19 in Shrewsbury

More women are being encouraged to become firefighters by enrolling with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A third “taster” day just for women will be held at Shrewsbury fire HQ on July 19 after two successful previous events in Craven Arms and Oswestry.

The brigade wants to attract more women to join the county’s 300 plus “on call” fully trained firefighters who deal with around the clock emergencies.

Shropshire Fire Aid to Romania

A team of volunteers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have set off for their annual trip to Romania to donate much needed fire equipment and to provide aid to an old people’s home.

The aid convoy will travel 1,800 miles across Europe to deliver four fire engines, two 4x4 vehicles, equipment and uniforms to fire stations in Transylvania.

A total of three firefighters from Merseyside are also joining the 11 strong Shropshire expedition codenamed Operation Sabre.

Shropshire Fire Budget - A Public Appeal

The people of Shropshire are being asked to give their views on major cost cutting plans for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service at a series of public meetings being held across the county in July.

The public can question fire chiefs and members of Shropshire and Wrekin Fire Authority about plans to move Shrewsbury’s fire control and merge it with a larger 999 control centre outside the county saving £300,000 a year.

“We want the people of Shropshire to give us feedback about what they think of the proposals,” said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Andy Johnson.
