Sally is Firefighting Fit

A firefighter who feared she would never walk again after breaking her back in an accident will walk up The Wrekin for the final trip of a marathon 52 week challenge which has raised £1,500 for charity.

Sally Barnett will set off at 9am on Friday, June 20,  to complete a total of 52 walks up and down the Shropshire mountain over the past year wearing full firefighting kit and carrying a breathing apparatus cylinder weighing 17.5kg for a total distance of 85,280ft.

Royal Invite for Fire Brigade Trio

Three members of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have been honoured with invites to the Queen's Royal Garden parties.

Wem Watch Manager Phil Smith, Shrewsbury Fire Control Watch Manager Ian Titley and Station Manager Neil Griffiths attended the prestigious Buckingham Palace events in June.

Chief Fire Officer John Redmond said: "The honour is in recognition of their dedication and good work for the county fire and rescue service.  We are very proud of them."

Charity Efforts Recognised

A Shropshire firefighter who has helped to raise more than £42,000 has been recognised for his “outstanding” contribution to charity.

An “on call” firefighter at Prees and Hodnet fire stations, Alan Smith received the Telent Shield for his “tireless” fundraising from Councillor John Hurtst-Knight. (pictured below)

Over the past five years, Alan has run local bingo nights with he help of his parents John and Sue with the aim of supporting local charities and the National Fire Fighters Charity.

HIGH SHERIFF’S GOOD CITIZEN’S AWARD

The UK’s longest serving firefighter from Shropshire is to be recognised for his distinguished service.

Roger Smith (69), a former mayor of Market Drayton, has been a member of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service for a record 47 years.

He has been awarded the High Sheriff’s Good Citizen’s Award for his “substantial contribution” to society and for making “a significant difference” to the safety and well being of his local community.

CHARITY CAR WASH SUCCESS

Shropshire firefighters joined churchgoers and a family support group in a united car cleaning effort which raised more than £600 for their three charities.

Armed with buckets and sponges, they washed more than 50 cars on Harry Tuffin’s car park in Ludlow backed with free refreshments from the nearby Squirrel pub.

Also helping were youngsters from the South Shropshire Youth Forum.

Burns Extrication Project

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have been working on a partnership with West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) and the University Hospital Birmingham (UHB).

The aim of the project is to enhance our patient care and to improve survivability of casualties following burns trauma sustained at an incident.

West Midlands Fire Service and the UHB have a long standing partnership with the aim of enhancing patient care through continual improvement and innovation.

THE FUTURE FOR FIRE AND RESCUE IN SHROPSHIRE

 

 

The people of Shropshire are being asked to give their views to help shape the future of a trimmed down Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service hit by £4m in budget cuts.

Senior fire officers are giving the public an opportunity to have their say on a major new cost cutting plan in the fight to “balance the books” after phased multi million pound cuts due to the Government’s austerity campaign.

The public has “a powerful voice” which led to the scrapping of a previous plan to close four rural fire stations, said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Andy Johnson.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service fly rainbow flag to support IDAHO

Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service have raised a rainbow flag over their Shrewsbury Headquarters and Telford Training Centre to demonstrate their support for the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).

The week long display of the rainbow flag marks their commitment to challenge homophobia, to provide a supportive and accepting workplace for LGBT employees; and to celebrate the recent same-sex marriage legislation.
