HIGH SHERIFF’S GOOD CITIZEN’S AWARD

The UK’s longest serving firefighter from Shropshire is to be recognised for his distinguished service.

Roger Smith (69), a former mayor of Market Drayton, has been a member of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service for a record 47 years.

He has been awarded the High Sheriff’s Good Citizen’s Award for his “substantial contribution” to society and for making “a significant difference” to the safety and well being of his local community.

CHARITY CAR WASH SUCCESS

Shropshire firefighters joined churchgoers and a family support group in a united car cleaning effort which raised more than £600 for their three charities.

Armed with buckets and sponges, they washed more than 50 cars on Harry Tuffin’s car park in Ludlow backed with free refreshments from the nearby Squirrel pub.

Also helping were youngsters from the South Shropshire Youth Forum.

Burns Extrication Project

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have been working on a partnership with West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) and the University Hospital Birmingham (UHB).

The aim of the project is to enhance our patient care and to improve survivability of casualties following burns trauma sustained at an incident.

West Midlands Fire Service and the UHB have a long standing partnership with the aim of enhancing patient care through continual improvement and innovation.

THE FUTURE FOR FIRE AND RESCUE IN SHROPSHIRE

The people of Shropshire are being asked to give their views to help shape the future of a trimmed down Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service hit by £4m in budget cuts.

Senior fire officers are giving the public an opportunity to have their say on a major new cost cutting plan in the fight to “balance the books” after phased multi million pound cuts due to the Government’s austerity campaign.

The public has “a powerful voice” which led to the scrapping of a previous plan to close four rural fire stations, said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Andy Johnson.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service fly rainbow flag to support IDAHO

Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service have raised a rainbow flag over their Shrewsbury Headquarters and Telford Training Centre to demonstrate their support for the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).

The week long display of the rainbow flag marks their commitment to challenge homophobia, to provide a supportive and accepting workplace for LGBT employees; and to celebrate the recent same-sex marriage legislation.

Shrewsbury Fire Station Open Day CANCELLED

Cancelled

A new period of industrial action will unfortunately fall on the same day as the planned Open Day at Shrewsbury Fire Station.

Because of this unforeseen circumstance we have cancelled the event.

Sincere apologies to everyone who was planning to attend.

Shrewsbury Retained are hosting an open day at Shrewsbury again this year after a very successful event last year.

Strike action

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) have announced the following strike action and periods of action short of a strike:

Appeal for ‘on call’ firefighters

An appeal has gone out for more “on call” firefighters across Shropshire including the Minsterley and Bishops Castle areas. “Giving something back to the community” is what inspires most firefighters, said Bishops Castle Watch Manager Tracey Magill, an on call firefighter with 30 years’ experience, who is a self-employed oak floor fitter.

Arson in Woodside, Telford

Two appliances from Telford and an appliance from Tweedale, together with a Fire Investigations Officer attended the fire which was started deliberately.
