A cow in a canal, a disgruntled bull left floundering in a river and a heifer with its head stuck in a feeder are just some of the incidents which Shropshire firefighters have been called to deal with along with house fires and road crash rescues. Now they are being given training by Shropshire Young Farmers in how to handle distressed livestock and other animals in a newly introduced scheme by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

On Saturday 8th March 2008 it was the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund's 'Car Wash' day. This is a national event with staff from fire stations across the country washing cars to raise funds for the FSNBF.

The rescue of Shropshire motorists trapped in the wreckage of their cars after a road crash has been given a major boost with a new specialist rescue tender for county firefighters.

Fire Crews were called to a Road Traffic Collision on the B4376, outside The Round House, near Broseley at 20:10hrs on Monday 18th February 2008. Two appliances, the Rescue Tender and an Incident Commander were mobilized.

Shropshire fire officer Phil Brooks retired on Friday February 15th after a public service career spanning 40 years.

A district officer for north Shropshire, Phil joined Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in 1978 and has since worked across the county in operations, training and community fire safety.

Before becoming a firefighter he spent 10 years as a policeman in the Lancashire Constabulary and West Mercia based at Kirby and Shrewsbury.

Firefighters turned out in force to Shropshire's largest food storage depot in a major exercise launched to prepare them for any future large scale blaze.
