A football coach, a surveyor and a care worker have a skill in common – they are all Shropshire firefighters.

They were among 18 of the latest recruits to pass out from their basic training at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service last night.

They and their employers were thanked by Chief Fire Officer Alan Taylor for contributing to Shropshire's firefighting force.

Staff at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service recently celebrated their achievements arising from their participation within the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme. Presentations were made to participants by the Chair of Shropshire and Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority – Councillor Stuart West and Mr Kursat Egriboz, Director for ECOTEC (the UK National Agency for Leonardo).

A Shropshire firefighter has been nominated for a top national award as England's bravest firefighter.

Alex Howell, based at Telford fire station, is one of four firefighters put forward for the accolade for showing "outstanding courage" in rescuing two women in a fierce house fire.

He will take a bow along with other fire heroes in front of thousands of fans at tonight's Wembley stadium before England's friendly international with Switzerland.

Fire cover in Shrewsbury would suffer without the help of a leading county firm, it has been revealed.

Doncasters Aerospace Components is doing its bit to keep the fire service up to full strength in the town by allowing three of its staff – all retained firefighters - to down tools and leave work when an emergency call comes through.

Yesterday at 13:25hrs a call was received by Fire Control from a member of the public reporting a fire in a property at The Knolls, Shrewsbury.

A total of two fire appliances from Shrewsbury and the Incident Commander were mobilised to the incident.

Hodnet firefighters raised £2883 in aid of the Warwickshire Firefighters Family Fund when they held a grand auction, prize bingo and draw at Hodnet Social Club on Sunday 16 December 2007.

They secured donations of 140 prizes and vouchers from private individuals and companies and would like to convey their thanks to all those who kindly donated prizes.

A team of six Shropshire firefighters today set off from Shrewsbury on a three day 1,300 mile journey to Hungary to donate a decommissioned rescue tender to volunteer firefighters near Budapest.

The vehicle, which has seen 20 years service on the roads of Shropshire, is specially designed for dealing with road traffic collisions and collapsed buildings. It is equipped with a range of cutting, lifting and spreading equipment essential for releasing trapped casualties.

A New Year fire safety message has been issued by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service – more

On 28th June 2007 Fire Control Operator Sally Barnett, 35, climbed Snowdon - one year after breaking her back in a horse riding accident her goal was to raise money for Oswestry Orthopaedic Hospital Physiotherapy Department and the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, both of which were instrumental in the recovery from her injury.

Sally was joined on the walk by friends and colleagues and between them they raised a combined total of £1500 for the two charities.

On Saturday 17 November firefighters from Ludlow fire station and members of staff from Ludlow branch of Barclays Bank held a car wash at Harry Tuffins in Sheet Road, Ludlow.

This was in aid of the Warwickshire Firefighters Families Fund and also the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund.

The total raised on the day was a marvellous £1,013.79 to which Barclays Bank promised to donate an extra £750. This added up to a soap sudding total of £1763.79, with £881.89 going to more
