Save safely in Shropshire this Winter

As we all feel the pinch of rising energy prices, you may be considering ways in which to save on your energy bills this winter.

Only heat the rooms you use If you’re able to switch individual radiators off in your home, save money by only keeping radiators switched on in the rooms you use most. 

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service volunteers undertake journey for Ukraine

6 volunteers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service will be undertaking a trip from the UK to Poland in a bid to deliver 2 fire engines and 250 pieces of kit for fellow firefighters in Ukraine.

Departing from Shrewsbury Fire Station on Thursday 6 October, the journey will see the crew pass through 4 countries, covering a distance of around 1500 miles.

Chief Fire Officer Rod Hammerton oversaw some of their preparations this week and said:

Glittering night of achievement for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service

 

Theatre Severn hosted a long service and good conduct awards ceremony last night for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) staff.

Honoured on the night were 10 recipients of the Long Service and Good Conduct, presented to employees in recognition of 20 years of exemplary service.

Before presenting the medals Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Mrs Anna Turner JP, said:

“It’s always an honour and a privilege to meet people like yourselves and convey the appreciation of the people of Shropshire for all that you do”

Crews from around the County and beyond work together to tackle fire in Clun

At 8:53pm last night, crews from around the county were mobilised to a fire in a commercial scrap yard at Five Turnings, Clun.

At its peak we had 8 appliances and specialist units on scene as the fire spread through several hundred tonnes of scrap.

With assistance from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub CGC / Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue, SFRS officers and our fantastic Fire Control; crews worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.

New on-call firefighters honoured at evening of celebration

Last night (Monday 25 July) Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury hosted an evening of awards and celebration for the latest batch of on-call firefighter recruits to join Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Friends and family were invited along to see the 26 firefighters receive their certificates, with a select few being awarded the silver axe for top student on their course.

New partnership helps increase fire safety understanding in the elderly

Local home care provider, Home Instead Telford, Newport and Market Drayton has formed a potentially life-saving partnership with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service to increase understanding of fire safety within the elderly population.

Home Instead, which cares for older people in the comfort of their own homes, helping them live independently for longer, have formed this partnership to enhance the lives of their clients – keeping them safe and well, protected from the dangers of fire.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service staff member named on The Queen’s New Year’s Honours List

Prevention Manager, Rabinder Dhami, joined SFRS in 1995 and has spent his career working in the Prevention department which oversees the fire safety of vulnerable people in their own homes.

The medal, which is a British and Commonwealth award for civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown, will be presented to him by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Shropshire, Anna Turner later in the year.

Upon hearing the news of his award, Rabinder, from Telford, said:

Fire Service’s Chaplain honoured with the British Empire Medal

The medal is awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown.

He has been highlighted for his services to the people of Shropshire as a result of his career and community work in the region.

Keith, who lives in Telford, said:

“I’m really quite overwhelmed. I could not have achieved this without the unwavering support of family, friends and the many people who have been involved in my life and work for so many years.

“I served with West Midlands Police from 1969 before retiring from my role as Inspector in 1995.
