Local firefighters take on epic bike ride in support of charities

3 firefighters from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service will be setting off on a gruelling 1000-mile bike ride from Land’s End to John o’ Groats on Thursday 20 July.

Rob Simcox (Shropshire), Alec Thomas (Shropshire) and Russ Brown (Staffordshire) are undertaking the journey to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and The Fire Fighters Charity.

Rob Simcox, Watch Manager of Shropshire Fire and Rescue’s training department, explained why the cause was so important to him:

Local University to be home of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s 4x4 driver training

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and Harper Adams University have reached an agreement that will see the Service’s 4x4 driver training take place on the University’s facility. This will provide SFRS staff with a safe environment to maintain their essential driving skills.

Station Manager James Bainbridge said,

“The location we used previously for the training was no longer accessible, so we really jumped at the chance to work with another local organisation.

Shropshire Area Manager Named Bright Light

The ‘Bright Light Award’ category recognises individuals who have led the way in their role in the fire service, acting as a shining example to others. This is through recruitment, retention or progression of women or enabling women to develop through access to opportunities and resources.

Janette, who joined SFRS in March 2021, was nominated in the national awards for her remarkable contributions to the Fire Service. She is also a National Fire Chiefs Council Lead for HMICFRS/Inspection.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Introduces Body Worn Video Technology

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has announced they will be deploying body worn cameras in certain operations. The equipment is expected to be introduced over the next couple of months.

Footage will be used for purposes of incident monitoring, fire investigation and fire safety enforcement and will be assigned to incident commanders, training instructors and Protection Officers.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Officer honoured in New Year Honours List

A Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) officer has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for Services to the Fire Service in The King’s New Year Honours List for 2023.

Station Manager Tom Hatfield joined Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2005 following military service with the Royal Engineers. He subsequently worked with West Midlands Urban Search and Rescue and International Search and Rescue teams before transferring to Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2018.
